Power Session #3: Managing Up
When it comes to managing up, who is actually responsible for making the working relationship a great partnership?
This is your weekly power session—a quick, tactical coaching session inspired by real client conversations that you can access whenever and wherever you need it.
The Situation
You have a 1:1 coming up with your manager so you carve out 1-2 hours to prepare. As you do, you ask yourself, “does it really have to take this long to prepare for a 1:1?”
It’s a fleeting question in your mind because the answer is moot. You’ve had enough of these to know that if you want your 1:1 to go well (and avoid being blamed for anything), you want to come in ready.
So, you pull up the 1:1 doc you created a few months ago, add the different topics you want to discuss, update the status of the projects your working on, make sure the important pre-reads are hyperlinked and easy to access, and mark a couple reminders like your own upcoming performance review or that big customer meeting they agreed to join. You also make a point to have the notes and action items from your last 1:1 well documented so they can’t claim the don’t remember.
Once you feel good that the 1:1 doc has all your bases covered, you draft some quick talking points in a private doc then say them out loud a couple of times just to make sure it’s going come out the way you need it to.
