The Situation
Think back to the last time you faced bad news or a disappointing outcome. Did a key leader resign or did you miss your revenue goal for the quarter? Maybe your first big customer churned within the first 30 days. Whatever comes to mind, think about how you felt in that moment when you heard the news; what do you remember about what happened next? What did you tell yourself about why it happened? And ultimately, what did you tell the team?
In many cases, bad news gets brushed under the rug and everyone is expected to move on without any real acknowledgement of what happened. The team quickly gets refocused on the next big thing to look forward to. Other times, companies hold all-hands meetings or send out an announcement to control the narrative and reframe bad news as actually somehow being for the best. Sometimes, teams will run a full post-mortem to face it head on and extract as much learning out of a bad situation as possible.
